Clio, Alabama - Petrified Wood
October 31, 2008

The Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society had a scheduled field trip on Friday, October 31, 2008 to Clio, Alabama to collect petrified wood. We had a good turnout and the weather was perfect-70 degrees and a beautiful bright sunny day. We all met in downtown Clio where we all introduced ourselves to Herb Whittington, the leader for the day. From there we took the short drive over to the collecting site. The site was just off the road and we were able to park inside the fence about 20 feet from where the wood was lying on the ground. It was just a matter of finding the pieces that you wanted and getting them weighed up for payment. The wood from here is covered with druzy crystals and is excellent for display.
